When Jason Doukas was a just a kid, he had the pets that most of us had — and a few of the pets that some of us really wanted, including snakes, hedgehogs and even a pet tarantula. As he grew older, he continued to enjoy things that were off the beaten path, starting with his choice of veterinary schools.
"I spent my first year of veterinary school in the Caribbean on the island of St. Kitts at Ross University," explains Doukas. But after that, he came back to the States, transferring to and graduating from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2008. From there, it was on to a one-year internship in small animal medicine and surgery at the University of Pennsylvania. Originally from New York, he made the move to Chicago in 2009, along with a cat named Crunch. "He has since followed me to the Caribbean, Champaign, Philadelphia and now Chicago," Jason explains. Crunch is enjoying life with his new canine companion, Charlie, who was adopted from a rescue group.
It was the teaching component that first drew Jason to Chicago and the Furnetic veterinary clinic."During my internship, I realized how rewarding it can be to have a part in teaching the next class of graduating veterinarians," he continues."I now get the privilege to both teach and work in a state-of-the-art general practice. I'm excited to be a part of the hospital and watch how it grows, as I'm sure that it will."
In addition to teaching veterinary medicine, Jason loves working with animals and their owners."The challenge of working with a patient that can't speak to you and the reward of seeing a happy owner leave with a pet that I helped to treat makes all the hard work well worth it."
When he's not exploring the many fine restaurants of his new city home, Jason lives a very active life, which includes jogging, camping, kayaking, fishing, and diving. He's already explored the waters off of Long Island, St. Kitts, Tortola, St. Marteen and Puerto Rico and he looks forward to traveling more. In addition to his work at Furnetic, Jason is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the Illinois State Veterinary Medical Association (ISVMA), and the Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society (VECCS).
